Lotus Cars is British manufacturer of sports and racing cars, based in Hetele, Norfolk, England. The company was founded in 1952 by Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman as the Lotus Engineering Ltd. Initially the production was located in the former stables in Hornsey. Since 1966, car production was moved to a modern factory near Hetel. Near the factory there was an old military airfield, which was converted into a test track. In 1986 the company was bought by General Motors, which sold it to A.C.B.N. Holdings S.A. August 27, 1993 for US $ 30 million. In 1996 a controlling stake has been bought by Malaysian concern Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Bhd (Proton), which owns the Malaysian car company Proton.
