Review Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake: Weird by Name but Rich in Quality

What is in a name? Sounding a bit Shakespearean the etymological credentials of “shooting brake” need to be explained. In actuality the car is nothing but an estate which essentially is a sedan whose third box is merged with the second box by an elongated roof so as to accommodate foldable seats in the rear, thereby exponentially increasing the boot size. Such vehicles were used in pre and post world war eras to ferry the aristocrats around on their game hunts and the extra boot space catered for their firearms and camping equipment. The word break comes from similar vehicle albeit much roomier which were used to break in truant horses. Review Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake to realize that it is all in the name…eh!

The Pedigree – Review Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake

The CLA shooting brake has its roots deeply planted into the heritage of the venerable E class with the obvious external and internal modifications done to convert it into an estate.

Styling and Design

Mercedes-Benz significantly redefined the concept of CLS Shooting Brake. More refined interior now boasts many new, perfectly produced parts, combining modern luxury and passionate sporting character. In addition, they implemented a revolutionary technological innovation. Futurist MULTIBEAM LED headlamps reveal new aspects in the field of lighting systemsThe real game starts after the B pillar where a large slopping roof merges into the tail and seems to be ending nowhere before hitting the tarmac. Review Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake to realize that the beautiful profile and glamorous behind (no pun intended) that the vehicle possesses are just because of this brilliantly crafted roof.

Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake at the Presentation

On the inside the cabin is not ultra modern but has most of the utilitarian goodies including an LED screen for the infotainment system which doubles up as a navigation screen and a touch control for playing multimedia files. Out here the resemblance of the E class innards is too evident. The only thing that has changed is the view from the tail gate. Extending the roof has just added another 15 liters of space to the boot but folding the seats increase the carrying capacity to 1500 liters. Loading luggage from the tail may be a little tricky because of the extended lower lip of the boot which in my humble opinion is a definite grouch. Besides this the sitting for the rear seat passengers has improved with about 4 cms of extra headroom.

The vehicle comes with V6 3.0 liter turbo diesel, producing a decent 261 BHPs in the usual configuration but is also available with a much more powerful AMG V8 petrol engine.

The Drive

The suspensions are a little on the softer side while the ride is silky smooth and absolutely quiet. The shooting brake doesn’t burn the tarmac with its numbers but is more than adequate to get from one place to another in style with plenty of luggage and at the same time making a profound statement.
